How we put this guide together

To put this guide together, we checked coverage against Ofcom Connected Nations data (January 2026, as published by the ONS), network and package claims against operators' own websites and announcements, and real-world performance against Opensignal's UK Fixed Broadband Experience report (December 2025). Coverage figures cover all premises, homes and businesses. Availability at an individual address can differ from area averages, so always run a postcode check before ordering.

Broadband coverage in Leeds

Leeds has some of the strongest coverage of any large UK city. In the Leeds City Council area, 93.1% of premises can get full fibre (FTTP) and 96.0% can get gigabit-capable broadband, against UK averages of 81.0% and 87.8%. Of the 26 largest UK cities we track, Leeds ranks seventh for full fibre and tenth for gigabit coverage.

Leeds sits close to the rest of West Yorkshire rather than far ahead of it, and slightly above the West Yorkshire average on both measures. Superfast broadband reaches 98.5% of Leeds premises, so very few addresses are limited to speeds under 30Mbps. The figures are averages across the whole council area, so your own address can still differ.

Broadband networks in Leeds

Three types of network serve Leeds, and the deals you can order depend on which of them reach your address.

Openreach

covers almost every Leeds address with at least FTTC (part fibre), and its full fibre network now reaches most of the city. Providers including BT, Sky, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Plusnet, NOW and EE sell over Openreach lines.

Virgin Media

runs its own cable network across much of Leeds and has been adding full fibre. In 2025 it reported that 56,652 more Leeds homes could get Virgin Media Full Fibre, in areas including Headingley, Holbeck, Chapel Allerton and Cross Gates, with speeds up to 2Gbps.

CityFibre

built full fibre in parts of south and west Leeds, including Beeston, Belle Isle, Holbeck, Hunslet, Morley, Bramley, Farsley and Stanningley. You cannot buy from CityFibre directly: its network is sold through providers including Vodafone and TalkTalk. Coverage is street by street, so a postcode check shows whether it reaches you.

What you can order depends on the networks live at your address. Virgin Media offers up to 2Gbps on its full fibre in Leeds, with symmetrical upload speeds available on that tier. Openreach full fibre is sold at up to 1.8Gbps by some providers.

Opensignal's December 2025 report measured the wider Leeds and Bradford area. Virgin Media recorded the fastest average downloads (188.0Mbps), while brsk, now YouFibre, led on reliability and recorded the fastest uploads (152.2Mbps). Those results cover the wider area, so check your postcode to see whether YouFibre reaches your street.

Student broadband in Leeds

Leeds has a large student population across the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University, and many students share houses. Virgin Media's 2025 full fibre expansion included Headingley, which gives streets there a full fibre option from more than one network.

When you share, look for a contract length that matches your tenancy. Rolling monthly contracts cost more per month but avoid paying for a connection over summer. Splitting one fast full fibre package between housemates is usually cheaper than individual mobile data plans.

Social tariffs in Leeds

If you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker's Allowance or Income Support, you can usually get a discounted social tariff. Social tariffs cost £12 to £25 a month, with speeds from around 15Mbps up to 1Gbps depending on the provider. There are no exit fees and no mid-contract price rises.

They are available across Leeds wherever the provider's network reaches. Providers do not advertise them heavily, so ask directly or check Ofcom's list of social tariffs.

Providers you can compare in Leeds

In Leeds you can compare deals from Sky, BT, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Plusnet, NOW, EE and Virgin Media. Vodafone and TalkTalk also sell over CityFibre where it is live. The providers shown for your address depend on which networks serve it.

Start with a postcode check to see address-level options, then read how we compare to understand how deals are ranked.
