    Broadband coverage in Bristol

    Bristol's gigabit coverage is good, but its full fibre coverage is below most large UK cities. In the Bristol City Council area, 94.1% of premises can get gigabit-capable broadband and 83.4% can get full fibre (FTTP), against UK averages of 87.8% and 81.0%. Of the 26 largest UK cities we track, Bristol ranks 22nd for full fibre and joint 17th for gigabit coverage.

    The gap between the two figures matters. Gigabit-capable includes Virgin Media's upgraded cable network as well as full fibre, so around one in ten Bristol premises can get gigabit speeds without a full fibre line. Superfast broadband reaches 97.0% of Bristol premises, slightly below the UK average of 97.7%.

    Broadband networks in Bristol

    Three networks serve Bristol, and the deals you can order depend on which of them reach your address.

    Openreach

    covers almost every Bristol address with at least FTTC (part fibre), and its full fibre network now reaches most of the city. Providers including BT, Sky, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Plusnet, NOW and EE sell over Openreach lines.

    Virgin Media

    runs its own cable network across much of the city, with gigabit speeds across most of its footprint. It does not reach every street.

    Netomnia

    is building a full fibre network across Bristol that it says will serve more than 159,000 homes and businesses. Netomnia sells through partner providers rather than directly. YouFibre, its sister retail brand, sells packages in Bristol on this network. YouFibre's parent company is the subject of a proposed takeover by nexfibre, Virgin Media O2's full fibre joint venture. On 2 October 2026 the Competition and Markets Authority provisionally found that the deal could harm competition, with a final decision due by 15 December 2026.

    What you can order depends on the networks live at your address. YouFibre sells packages of up to 7 to 8Gbps with equal upload and download speeds on its own network, and Openreach full fibre is sold at up to 1.8Gbps by some providers. Check your postcode to see which speeds are offered at your address.

    Bristol and its neighbouring areas

    Bristol is better connected than most of the area around it. Its full fibre coverage (83.4%) is well ahead of South Gloucestershire (67.0%) and Bath and North East Somerset (72.9%), and above the West of England Combined Authority average of 76.2%. North Somerset is the exception, slightly ahead on full fibre at 84.5% but behind Bristol on gigabit coverage.

    This matters if you are moving within the Bristol area. Addresses with a Bristol postcode are not all inside the city council area. Parts of the BS postcode area, such as Filton and Bradley Stoke, are in South Gloucestershire, where full fibre coverage is much lower. If you are comparing homes, run a postcode check on each address rather than relying on the Bristol figures.

    Social tariffs in Bristol

    If you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker's Allowance or Income Support, you can usually get a discounted social tariff. Social tariffs cost £12 to £25 a month, with speeds from around 15Mbps up to 1Gbps depending on the provider. There are no exit fees and no mid-contract price rises.

    They are available across Bristol wherever the provider's network reaches. Providers do not advertise them heavily, so ask directly or check Ofcom's list of social tariffs.
